In this episode, I answer a very common listener question – What do I do with my newcomers in the last 3 weeks of school? They will likely speak no English over the summer. How CnI help them without frustration?
My answer to this is really that the end of the year is similar to the beginning of the year in that we can still focus on relationship and community building activities. Just like the first weeks are important to set the tone for the school year, the last few weeks are important for setting the tone for the Summer. Remember that not all students are excited for the end of the school year. School is a safe place for many students and the goal is to provide community and connections for them right up until the last day of school.
There are a few quick and easy ideas I love that require very little preparation. I also share the details of my 5 favorite end of the year activities that can be valuable for students of various ages and proficiency levels.
End of the year activities you will hear more about:
- Vocabulary Review activities with quotes and word games
- Goal Setting with your students
- End of the Year Student Portfolios
- Pamphlets for New English language learners
- A letter to incoming students
- Class Playlist
- Student feedback on your class
- Memory Book for the end of the school year
