In today’s episode, I speak with Kristen Vibas, an ELL teacher from Virginia, who I met on Instagram. Kristen has been teaching since 2005. In 2012, she opened her Teachers Pay Teachers store and her blog, A Walk in the Chalk. She shares how she went from aspiring actress to ELL teacher, and shares peeks into her classroom. You will love the tips and strategies she has developed on how to support multilingual students and how to teach reading to ELLs as much as I did.
Kristen and I focus our discussion on reading and why it is such a challenging domain for students to master. We touch on the newest research in the science of reading and the 5 components of reading and the skills that make each one important. She also shares what she takes into consideration when identifying where to begin with reading instruction, tried and true activities she uses in her classroom, and what she recommends for her students over the summer to keep them reading while they are not in school.
Both content teachers and ELL teachers will find this episode valuable as reading is such a critical part of learning in all subjects.
