Vocabulary Workbook for your ESL Students

Who doesn’t like a free vocabulary workbook?I know I do!

Super Vocabulary Workbook

If you are anything like me, you are on a constant “hunt” for worksheets that would not clutter your desk, would be easy to use and you can use them over a period of a few days. Also, worksheets that you actually remember you have!

I have created this workbook, or a collection of worksheets that you can use when you teach vocabulary to your students or when you need to review, for a few reasons.

A packet of ESL vocabulary worksheets in one place

I have to admit I try to be organized but because of the fast-paced nature of my job, I just keep piling the stacks of paper on my desk and in my bag and at one school and then at another school. The worst thing is to actually KNOW that you have a particular worksheet for a particular time of day, week or a certain class but not being able to FIND IT!

The Super Vocabulary Workbook contains 12 worksheets that can be printed out on an as-needed basis but they are always on your computer and not in some obscure file folder in a classroom that you’ve been to once.

The vocabulary worksheets go from memorization to application

The first couple of worksheets are mostly for when you assign new words to students. They serve as a space for them to write down the words, to look up the definitions – or for you to explain them – and write them down in their own words.

Activities like visualizing (finding a picture), writing your own sentence using the word and figuring out what are the synonyms and antonyms of the vocabulary words come when the students are more familiar with the meaning.

Worksheets for any ESL level

While to fully utilize them, a student should be more at a high-beginning-intermediate level of English proficiency, the worksheets may still be used with your English learners who are just entering the wonders of learning the language.

Higher level English learners would be able to fill in the worksheets with words, definitions and pictures independently while a beginner student could work individually with you on writing/spelling, pronunciation and visualization of the word (skipping the wordy definitions). At the same time, the definitions field could be used for a translated meaning of the word for those who don’t have enough language yet.

The worksheets can be used in any order and in multiple ways

Here are a few examples:

  • students can act out the words, or the pictures that they have chosen to represent the word
  • similarly, students can draw the picture of the word on the board and others guess the meaning of it
  • you can assign teams for who will finish the word search the quickest
  • split the words in half and give one student (group) 5 words to write sentences with and another student (group) the other 5 words to write sentences with.
  • If you have higher level ESL students, see how many synonyms and antonyms they can come up for one word.

These are just a few possibilities but the goal of this entire workbook is for you to have it in one place and never lose it and for students to be exposed to the words as many times as possible until they “own” them.

On a final note, my favorite experience in teaching new vocabulary is when the students come to class and tell me that they have heard the word in another class, or even outside of it, or they read it in a textbook or a book. To me, that is a win because that means they are paying attention and are on their way to improving their English even more!

  1. This is wonderful! I have a friend who teaches English as a second language, I will be sure to share this with her!
    1. That's great! I want to provide other materials, so any feedback on what you will benefit the most from is appreciated!Thank you:)
  2. Thank you so much for these worksheets!!! I like that pairwork is provided, but I would print these pictures on my own so that they could match them immediately. And this idea with a table with synonyms and antonyms is really helpful to kill two birds with one stone ? ;-)
